Job Description
Data Scientist-(3243526)
Description
GENERAL SUMMARY / OVERVIEW STATEMENT :
The Data Scientist works in The Center for Value-Based Health Care & Sciences (CVBHCS) to provide analytical support for research activities within the Department of Neurology, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
The MGH Center for Value-Based Health Care & Sciences focuses on health services and outcomes research, specifically assessing the economic burden associated with neurological conditions.
The center was created to increase the value of healthcare in neurology concerning the ratio of quality and outcomes to cost ().
Our center applies computational and machine learning methods to understand the impact of seizures and abnormal brain activity on outcomes in critically ill patients.
Our goal is to improve treatment strategies and the clinical care of these patients. The analysis of large datasets (including EHR and EEG datasets, among others) is central to these efforts.
Specific efforts focus on developing methods for automatically abstracting data, including clinical variables (, medication doses, radiology, laboratory data) and clinical outcomes (, medication adverse effects) on a large scale, creating tools to predict clinical outcomes in patients with seizures and abnormal EEG patterns treated with anti-seizure medications;
and understanding the relationships between abnormal patterns of brain activity (EEG patterns) and neurological deterioration.
Efforts will also focus on creating tools for data mining of structured and unstructured clinical data, including free text reports and clinical notes.
Reporting to the Co-Directors of the MGH CVBHCS, the Data Scientist contributes largely to the analytical components of ongoing studies.
These studies produce generalizable, publishable findings. Specifically, the Data Scientist works with a team of investigators, clinical research coordinators, and Scientists on various clinical studies and quality improvement projects.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Collaborate with Investigators, Clinical Research Coordinators, and Scientists of various clinical studies and quality improvement projects.

- Analyze EEG and other physiological time series data.
- Lead statistical modeling and analysis of diverse medical data.
- Development of natural language processing (NLP) tools and algorithms to identify certain data elements within the electronic health record system.
- Responsible for managing sizeable physiological database.
- Will have to responsibly use and keep extensive MGB databases for specific CVBHCS projects.
